"Battlefield"

Sam
St. Stephen Protomartyr

Bullets whip over the plain
Another man falls to the ground.
Death claims his innocent life
Boom! Another fatal sound.

My eyes scan the horizon
A sea of lifeless bodies.
I look back toward the enemy
The snow now falls in flurries.

Now hiding beneath the stiff grass
I hear screams from behind me.
A cannonball explodes nearby
The scene now a big blood sea.

I load up my shotgun.
Steady, ready to fire.
I aim intently for my target
Without any desire.

The bullets come close
But no harm was done.
I had to use my knife
A kill with a quick one.

Several long and tiresome hours pass.
The gruesome battle is done.
I saw the enemies had all fallen
But strangely did not feel we had won.
